Alexandra Catiere
FR: Le parcours sans frontières d’Alexandra Catière témoigne de son envie de tendre vers l’universel. De l’ancienne Union soviétique à la France en passant par les Etats-Unis, cette jeune photographe fait de l’intemporalité l’un des aspects majeurs de sa création. Ressuscitant la tradition humaniste, ses images sont celles des sensations, des atmosphères qu’elle réussit à capter. Sans jamais s’arrêter aux seuls genres du portrait ou du reportage, Alexandra fait de l’appareil photo l’instrument de son empathie pour la nature humaine et la vie en particulier.
EN: Alexandra Catiere’s life path, from the former Soviet Union to the United States and then to France, both scorns borders and testifies to her striving for universality. The photographer has made timelessness a salient feature of an oeuvre that revives photography’s humanistic tradition in a virtuoso capturing of sensation and atmosphere. Never settling simply for portrait or reportage, Alexandra uses the camera to express her empathy with human nature and, most of all, with life itself.

EN: 1978: Born in Minsk (former USSR, now Belarus).
2001: Graduated from Minsk State Linguistique University, specialising in English Literature and Psycology. During her university years, Alexandra works as a journalist, acts in films and makes videos.
2002: Moves to Moscow where she starts working for an artist Yuri Kuper.
2003: Gets a grant to study at the International Center of Photography (ICP), New York.
Leaves for New York, USA.
2005: Begins working for Irving Penn, cataloguing his archives and printing photographs under his supervision.
At the same time her series Behind the Glass is selected by the Art+Commerce Festival in New York (curator: Charlotte Cotton).
First publication of her photographs in The New Yorker. She becomes a regular contributor to the press: The New Yorker, The New York Times, FOAM, Le Monde, Crash, etc.
2006: First prize in the Portrait section at the Silver Camera Festival in Moscow.
2007: American Photo publishes a portfolio of her work.
Shows at the International Fashion and Photography Festival in Hyères, France.
2008: Moves to Paris. Exhibition in Europe at the Otto Zoo Gallery, Milan.
2009: Shows “I Cannot Give You Anything But Love” at the International Photography Festival of Rome and the Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York.
2010: She takes a fresh slant in her exhibition MMX at the Pobeda Gallery in Moscow: rather than presenting straightforward series, she begins creating new stories by mixing images from different periods and different locations.
2011: Residency at the Gwin Zegal Art Centre in Guingamp, Brittany.
Alexandra is awarded the first BMW Residency at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce in Chalon-sur-Saône, France.
2012: Her work from the BMW Residency at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce is shown at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, France.
2012: The first book “Here, Beyond the Mists”, is published by Trocadero, France.
2013: Catiere has a solo shows at the Moscow Museum of Photography, Munich Museum of BMW. She starts collaboration with the In Camera Gallery, Paris and exhibits regulary at the International Art Fair Paris Photo.
2014: “Here, Beyond the Mists” shows at the Macro – Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Italy.
2015: “Nobody believes that I`m alive” book is published by the Publisher GwinZegal, France.
2015: “Nobody believes that I`m alive” is shown at the National Center of AudioVisual Art, Luxembourg and Center for Photography PhotoPasquart , Bienne, Switzerland.
2018: Catiere becomes one of the eight nominées for the Prix Elysée 2018-2020, the catalogue of the winners is published by the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland.
2018: “Behind the Glass”, is published by Chose Commune, the book is shortlisted for the Aperture Prize at Paris Photo 2018.
2019: The solo exhibition at the Museum of Photography Nicephore Niepce in Chalon-sur-Saône combines one of her récent mural photogrammes together with other work from the book “Behind the Glass”. The opening is due to 15th of June, 2019.
2022: She is one of the Laureate of the Grande Commande Photographique, supported by the French Ministry of Culture and BnF, France.
2023: Artist in Residence at the Maison National des Artistes/ EHPAD, In parteneship with College International de la Photographie.
2024: “Aloud” , personel exhibition at the Centre Culturel Saint -Cyprian, Toulouse, France

Elle commence à s’intéresser à la photographie.

2005 : Elle rejoint le studio d’Irving Penn. Elle travaille sur les archives du photographe et réalise des tirages sous sa direction.

2009 : Elle expose son travail « I cannot give you anything but love » au Festival de la Photographie de Rome et à la galerie Miyako Yoshinaga de New York.
2010 : L’exposition « MMX » que lui consacre la galerie Pobeda à Moscou est l’occasion pour elle d’envisager la photographie autrement qu’à travers des séries construites en l’état. Elle commence à mêler les images prises à différentes époques et dans différents lieux, pour créer de nouvelles histoires.
2011 : Résidence au centre d’art et de recherche GwinZegal (France).
Lauréate de la première édition de la Résidence BMW au musée Nicéphore Niépce de Chalon-sur-Saône (France).
2012 : Le travail réalisé lors de la Résidence BMW au musée Nicéphore Niépce est exposé aux Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d’Arles.
2012: Livre publié par Edition Trocadéro « Ici, par-delà les Brumes ».
2013: Exposition ”Ici, par dela les Brumes” au Musée d’Art Moderne de Moscou, Russia, Munich Museum of BMW, In Camera Gallerie, Paris et Priska Pasquer Gallerie pendant la Paris Photo.
